North Korea makes Russian language mandatory in schools

(MENAFN) North Korea has added Russian as a required subject in its school curriculum as the country deepens its relationship with Russia.

Alexander Kozlov, Russia’s minister of natural resources and environment and co-chair of the Russia-North Korea intergovernmental commission, confirmed the move, noting the reciprocal interest in language learning, stating: "Russian has been introduced as a compulsory language in North Korean schools starting in the fourth grade. In Russia, more than 3,000 schoolchildren are currently studying Korean. Most of them are studying Korean as a second or third foreign language."

Reports indicate that beyond education, the two nations are enhancing cooperation in several areas including banking, energy, and medical training.

Relations between Pyongyang and Moscow have strengthened in recent years, with North Korean troops reportedly deployed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In September, during a meeting in Beijing with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed for the first time that North Korean soldiers had participated in the Ukraine war at Kim’s initiative.

Earlier intelligence assessments suggested that at least 600 North Korean troops had died while fighting alongside Russian forces, with total casualties possibly exceeding 4,700 since their involvement began last year.

In addition, the two countries formalized a comprehensive strategic partnership last year, which includes commitments to provide military support if either is attacked by a third party.
