South Korea Restores Humanitarian Channels with North Korea

(MENAFN) The South Korean government has granted permission to several humanitarian organizations to establish contact with North Korea, aiming to revive civilian-level exchanges between the two nations, local media revealed on Wednesday.

According to South Korean media, the Ministry of Unification has given the green light to two nongovernmental organizations seeking to engage in humanitarian communication with the North.

Inter-Korean civil interactions had been suspended in 2023 under former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration amid escalating tensions between the neighboring countries.

A ministry official responsible for unification stated that the government is set to consider additional applications from private groups as part of broader efforts to promote peace through the restoration of civil dialogue and cooperation.

This move follows President Lee Jae Myung’s commitment earlier this month to "stop the exhausting hostilities" with North Korea and to revive inter-Korean talks and joint initiatives.

Since his inauguration this month, Lee has acted swiftly to de-escalate tensions, including ending South Korea’s year-long loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the heavily guarded Demilitarized Zone, a move reportedly mirrored by North Korea.

On Tuesday, South Korea’s foreign minister nominee, Cho Hyun, pledged to work toward peace on the Korean Peninsula by encouraging dialogue between North Korea and the United States.
