N. Korea Launches Wonsan Kalma Coastal Resort to Revitalize Tourism
(MENAFN) North Korea has launched the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area on its eastern coastline in a strategic move to revitalize tourism and generate vital foreign revenue amidst ongoing international sanctions, state-controlled media reported on Wednesday.
This expansive resort is set against the backdrop of a pristine white sand beach along the East Sea, according to a news agency.
"In order to enable our people to enjoy marine tourism culture to the fullest, more than anyone else, we started providing tourism services at the top-class scenic spot on July 1," the report stated.
The ambitious development includes more than 400 uniquely crafted buildings, along with water parks, sports facilities, and an array of entertainment and dining options.
The project is being promoted as a gift from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has positioned it as a symbol of “people-first politics” and a pioneering step toward shaping a new era for tourism in North Korea.
On opening day, visitors flocked from across the country, including from Kangwon Province, South Hamgyong Province, Pyongyang, North Hamgyong Province, Ryanggang Province, and Chagang Province, as reported by the agency.
With international sanctions crippling trade and financial flows, Pyongyang is likely pinning hopes on attracting foreign tourists once borders are fully reopened.
